If the product you mix is for human consumption, Stainless Steel should be used for all contact points. This is where the ingredients being mixed come in contact with the mixer. Optionally, all welds inside the mixer can be ground smooth. Oftentimes, Stainless Steel Construction is required for mixing certain veterinary products and when handling items that have a harmful corrosive or acidic effect on mild steel.

2. Discharge Options

Mixer's outlet may be located in any of the 9 positions shown below. For most thorough cleanout, we suggest that the outlet be located in the bottom of the tank (Positions B, H, or E). Rate of discharge is controlled by setting outlet gate for desired volume.

Multiple Outlets may be used to reduce unloading time. Two or three bottom outlets may be employed. (Positions B, H, or E). They are also helpful when used in operations that bag as well as deliver in bulk out of the same mixer. For this application, both outlets must be in the same end, with one in the bottom of the tank and the other in one corner. (Positions E and F, or D and E, for example).

3.Stuffing Boxes

Their purpose is to prevent material being mixed from getting into the mixer's main bearings. While these bearings are located on the outside of the mixer's tank material can work its way through the tank where main shaft passes and into the bearings. Additionally depending upon the product, a small to moderate amount of leakage will occur where the shaft passes through the tank. Stuffing boxes prevent this. Located between end of tank and main bearings, they're filled with packing which absorbs material that escapes before it can get into the mixer's main bearings.

When mixing abrasive ingredients such as sand or corrosive material, stuffing boxes are a must. These products will cut through a bearing's seal and severely damage mixer's main bearings. Eventually bearing failure will occur.

Initial cost of stuffing boxes is oftentimes no more than the one time cost to replace the main bearings. Furthermore, potential and repetitive downtime due to this ongoing problem can be prevented by having this valuable feature built into your mixer. Stuffing boxes must be built in during construction.

4. Shaft Seals

Mechanical Seal : Consists of a rotating low friction seal face which attaches to the shaft and a stationary seal face which mates with the rotary face. Used for materials down to very fine powder size or where material head pressure is significant. Supplied with or without air purge for additional protection

Double Lip Seal: Mechanical spring action maintains contact of seal material to shaft at two points along shaft. Used for similar applications as single lip and somewhat finer powders when air purge is added.

Single Lip Seal: Mechanical spring action compresses seal material to shaft at a single point along shaft. Used for more granular powder and when there is low or minimal head pressure of finer materials.

Standard Packing Gland: Multiple strands of materials such as fibers, elastomer, metals or composite compressed against the shaft between solid plates. Seals well for material down to fine particle size or where material head pressure is significant.
